Bullion banks commonly hedge CME futures positions with physical metal, London OTC forwards, leases, swaps, and other offsetting positions. He argues that if these banks were truly carrying massive unhedged shorts, the recent surges in gold and silver would have produced devastating losses.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation then turns to central-bank gold buying and de-dollarization. Gottlieb believes geopolitical tensions, frozen Russian reserves, growing sovereign debt, and declining confidence in fiat currencies are increasing gold&#8217;s importance as a reserve asset. With U.S. debt around $40 trillion, he expects these longer-term fundamentals to remain supportive of gold.<\/p>\n<p>Silver is discussed as both a monetary and industrial metal, benefiting from demand tied to solar, AI, electronics, EVs, and other technologies. Gottlieb also highlights persistent supply deficits and explains how tariff fears exposed just how little freely available physical silver may exist when ETF holdings and other allocated inventories are removed from headline warehouse totals.<\/p>\n<p>Both Morgan and Gottlieb remain bullish on silver long term, but warn that leverage, speculation, options activity, and leveraged ETFs can push the market into dangerous parabolic moves.
